Elizabeth Guthrie is the founder of Herbal Somatics. They are a clinical herbalist, certified aromatherapist, and yoga teacher with a PhD in Natural Medicine with a specialization in

Naturopathic Psychology and a Master’s of Public Health in Functional Nutrition. They helped create research for UAB’s Integrative Medicine clinic. They are also the best-selling

author of The Trauma Informed Herbalist and hold multiple other certifications from conventional and traditional schools.


Elizabeth’s personal experiences led them to begin studying trauma and its effects on the body and mind. Now they help others to learn how natural wellness and somatic herbalism practices can be safely implemented as part of a trauma recovery journey.

Over three in-depth sessions, you will learn about trauma's lingering effects, the role of polyvagal theory, somatics, and how completing the stress cycle can promote healing. Discover fifteen essential oils and their applications in trauma recovery, along with an understanding of trauma responses such as fight, flight, freeze, and more. The course will also focus on special populations like children, caregivers, and chronic illness survivors, offering practical ways to create a trauma-informed aromatherapy practice that supports safety and healing. Each masterclass participant will receive a copy of Elizabeth's book "The Trauma Informed Herbalist".

Discover the most recent theories around trauma, why some people experience lingering effects while others do not, and what aromatherapy can do to help. Dig into polyvagal theory, somatics, and stress cycle completion to better understand why trauma manifests. This class will also include some details on an aromatherapist's scope as a complementary practitioner and ways that an aromatherapy practice can be made more trauma-informed.
Essential_oils
Uncover fifteen essential oils and the moments in which they can be most helpful to someone who is recovering from trauma. Inhalation and the limbic connection will be discussed, as well as the common trauma responses of fight, flight, freeze, fawn, and flop. The class will end with a quick discussion into sleep support and digestive support.

The first part of this class will cover some considerations that should be given to special populations including children, caregivers, survivors of intimate partner violence, and those struggling with chronic illness. The second part of this class will dive further into somatics and how aromatherapy can be utilized as a tool for safety and support as someone becomes more in tune with their body's needs.
